This is one of the four drums, with garlands and weeping putti, which Hawksmoor placed in front of St Alfege Church in Greenwich. They are thought to be based on Roman altars and appear elsewhere in his great London churches but not at ground level. This etching is an attempt to give them the sort of attention they deserve.
